- Another ‘book of dead’ slot, this one with multipliers
- Similar theme and design to other slots in this genre
- No base game features is a real shame
Scales of Dead slot is a PlayNGo game with expanding symbols and multipliers. There’s no doubt it’s similar to many other ‘book of’ games out there, but there are some differences as we’ll see. They’ve even go for the same theme as most classic ‘book of’ slots, and it really doesn’t feel like they’ve put much effort into the overall design of this game. There are 5 reels to play on with 3 rows, giving you 10 pay lines. Simply spin the reels and try to get a win from left to right using the following base symbols:
- 10, Jack or Queen
- King or Ace
- Ankh or Bird
- Cat
- Snake

Scales of Dead Slot Bonuses and Features
Wild Scatter. In this game, you don’t just have a standard wild symbol but a wild scatter, meaning it triggers both the free spins bonus that we’ll come onto shortly, as well as substituting for all other symbols in a winning combination to help form more wins. It doesn’t, however, substitute for special expanding symbols. As a scatter, it also comes with som scatter pays when you land 3, 4 or 5 of them.
Free Spins Bonus. This is triggered with at least 3 scatter symbols, giving you 8 free spins, and there are two parts to it. The first is the standard free spins bonus where a special expanding symbol is randomly chosen and whenever it lands, it will expand to fill the reels if it can create a win, even if it’s not adjacent to other matching symbols. If, however, you land 2 or more wild scatters during these spins, the sandstorm free spins will activate. Here you get 4 free spins, and it works in a similar way to the standard bonus except that now a random multiplier is applied to each expanding symbol, either of value 2x, 3x or 4x. If you land 2 or more wild scatters during this bonus, another 2 free spins are given, up to a maximum limit of 30. When the bonus ends, the base game continues.
Gamble. When you get a win during the base game, you can gamble to try and increase its value. Simply guess the colour or suit of a card to either double or quadruple the value of it.
Conclusion
Scales of Dead slot from PlayNGo certainly isn’t their best-looking game which is surprising given how much effort this developer usually puts into their designs. I’m not a huge fan of the overused Ancient Egyptian theme either, but there we go. On the surface it seems like another ‘book of’ slot with a free spins bonus that offers expanding symbols, but it tries to stand out a bit by offering the sandstorm free spins where multipliers come into play. It certainly helps, but I don’t think it really does enough. What would help a lot is having some base game features which are completely lacking here, so the gameplay can get boring quite quickly. Overall, not one of the my favourite games and not up to the high standard this developer usually produces, for a better-looking game why not try Love is in the Fair slot here.
